Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
Coming back to the UK for a month a doing a 4 day trip with my girlfriend (American) so going to take her to some lovely places around England. Does anyone have any recommendations for where to stay in the cotswolds? Ideally looking to stay in a Ye Olde Pub with a BandB upstairs type of place. So many bloody options on the internet so no idea. We just want to have a nose around the villages in the day times and drink some beers in a nice pub and eat some good food in the evening. I don't really care about the sightseeing, so the boozer is most important to me!

Nope no one has ever been. It's deserted.

Bourton-on-the -Water

Old English Inn pub on the corner right on the river.

Being a Yank she will love it.

Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
Burford and Bibury are chocolate box picturesque but correspondingly touristy. Quite close together so you can see both. Painswick outside of Stroud is nice. Could base yourself in Cirencester for somewhere larger.

Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
You can fit Bourton on the Water into that category as well. Again pretty close.

Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
I second bourton - it's a lovely place. There's a birdland place there too which is alright. Castle Combe is pretty too and has a race track for cars and bikes nearby if you're into that sort of thing.

Also upper and lower slaughter are lovely or if you head out towards Cheltenham sort of way, there's broadway and also winchcombe

Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
oooh, Bourton sounds lovely. Was looking at a place called Stow on the Wold, but a quick search of Bourton and i've found a place called The Lamb Inn. Stone Walls in the bedrooms - would be right up her alley. Not too worried about touristy as she'll be one herself!

Agree about Bourton, lovely place.

Moreton on Marsh is nice too and as said below Castle Combe is a lovely little village, with a few nice pubs to boot.

And if you're in that neck of the woods head down a little to Bath.

neilalex 1:19 Sun Jan 29
Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
Bath would definitely be the nicest sizeable place to go, beautiful little city. Malmesbury, on the way down is similar to the places already mentioned.

Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
This is interesting.

How far away from Bourton is Castle Coombe? If I was going to stay in Bourton the last thing I would want is to be able to hear the din from a fucking race track (what's the MATTER with people...?).

Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
A little bit selfish, but i've steered her away from Bath because i've already been there! We're heading up the lake district for a few days then a day/night/day in the Cotswolds on the way back to London.

Agreed, Bath is a lovely place, will take her next time.

Castle Combe is nowhere near Bourton Nurse.

Bourton-on-the-Water - some good pubs, the place gets packed with tourists.
There's a motor museum, if you're into that and for Mrs DJC a quaint little perfumery where she can mix her own (while you're in the boozer next door).
Bourton's Birdland wildlife park is worth a visit.

We stayed here (The Old Manse):-

That's the River Windrush in front.

The first time I drove through the 'chocolate box' bit of Broadway, what comes on the radio?
The Drifters - On Broadway, which I hadn't heard for years, spooky.

Bibury, Stow, Bourton, Castle Combe, Northleach, The Slaughters, Adlestrop all worth a visit

Some good pubs with accomodation here.

The Fox in Great Barrington is nice as well

Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
Did they move Bath to the Cotswolds neilalex, mate?

The Cotswolds are very pretty, but there are a lot of places to go that are just as pretty, much cheaper and not full of hunter-wearing banker cunts in green cable knit sweaters with leather patches on their elbows and children called Jemima and Toby. Also avoid Southwold for the same reason.

Try 'Constable Country', the Weald, Cromer and district or a bit further afield the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales.

I deliver all around the Costwolds and it full of Tory cunts. Nice place though, especially Bourton.

Have you told her you're taking her up the Cotswolds? A gentleman always tells a lady before taking her up the Cotswolds?

Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
Thanks Neil.

I don't mind making my way through the sort of tourists these places would attract. When you spend your working life pushed up against the sort of people I have to put up with on my London commute, Coltswold tourists would be a breath of fresh air. Almost literally.

I do fancy the Peak district too, mind.
